Chapter Six

The day had started out so well but went downhill fast after the lawyer called to inform her that her grandmother’s will was being contested. A few embers glowed in the grate. The smell of applewood filled the room. Thankfully, Beth was in bed sleeping, and she could try to figure out how to handle the situation. She set her coffee cup on the end table and settled back on one of the plush cushions. The lights were low, and even though she’d turned off the Christmas tree lights, the full moon shone through the window. A magical peace filled the room, but even with the coziness of the night and having been held in Jace’s arms and thoroughly kissed by him, a restlessness engulfed her.

She got up, walked to the window, and gazed at the winter wonderland outside. The snow had stopped hours ago, but the light flakes that had fallen lay pristine, covering the yard. What in the world was she going to do if she lost the house? Where would she and Beth go? She hadn’t heard back from any of the jobs for which she had applied. She didn’t want to move back to the apartment. Oh, my God. Did her parents know about this turn of events? Somehow she didn’t think they did; otherwise, they would have contacted her by now. Resigned, she decided to call them in the morning after she put Beth on the school bus and before she drove into town to meet with the lawyer.

“Hi, princess, what’s up? You get those decorations up yet? I understand you had a little help.”

“Yes. Everything is decorated. But that’s not why I called, Dad.” Amber filled him in with what little she knew. She wasn’t surprised at his reaction.

“That’s impossible. I’m an only child. My father would have known if he’d had another kid. He would have taken him in and raised him along with me. When did you get this call?”

“Last night. It was too late to call you. I don’t know the full details, but I’m meeting with the lawyer this morning.”

“We’re coming with you. We’ll put a stop to this nonsense. What time is your meeting?”

“Nine thirty. But, Dad, you don’t have to come.”

“Yes we do. There’s something shady here, and I damn well will have something to say about it. We’ll meet you there.”

Before Amber could protest further, her father hung up. She was between smiling at her father’s take-control attitude and concern for his health in getting riled up over someone claiming to be a sibling he knew nothing about. A deep sob escaped. She held her breath, trying to hold her emotions in check, then said the hell with it. With her parents by her side, she would face the facts head on and deal with whatever came her way. She grabbed her purse, her jacket, and headed out to the car. The sooner she got this meeting over with, the sooner she’d figure out how she was going to deal with the situation.
